Public Speaking and Debate

Public Speaking and Debate

This course will help students to communicate well, both privately and in public, with training in articulation, projection, hand gestures, etc. Learning to research topics for speeches will also be a part of this class.
Seven speeches will be graded, including informative, entertaining, demonstration, special occasion and persuasion. A mini-unit on debate will occur at the end of the second semester. Speeches will be graded according to a rubric, and grades will also be given based on class participation and sporadic quizzes. Homework will consist of research and speech preparation and practice. By the end of this class, students will feel more confident and ready when asked to speak in public

Deep Dive into World Wars 1 and 2

Deep Dive into World Wars 1 and 2

This course will provide an exciting opportunity for students to explore the world wars through maps, literature, biographies and strategy. Class time will be spent in lecture, mapping, reading documents and other activities. Students will be challenged to understand the reasons leading up to the wars, the men and women who were a part of them, and God’s hand over all. Homework will be an hour to an hour and a half to allow for a full history credit. Two semester projects will be required, as well (choice of dioramas, costumes,
persuasive paper, etc.) Periodic quizzes and tests will also be given.

Michigan History

Michigan History

In this fun class, students will learn about Michigan’s history, landmarks, animals and more! Class time will include read-alouds with students then having hands-on activities and experiments based on the reading. Facts and ideas will come to life as they spend time together mapping, building, coloring and experimenting! Homework will be minimal, with a year-end project (building/painting/cooking/or lapbook, etc.) that will be shown in class. My goal for this class is that students will not only learn how and why Michigan exists, but also understand and appreciate all that our state has to offer!
